WHAT SIZE OF BAT SHOULD I USE

Cricket bats come in various sizes, each tailored to suit players at different stages of their growth. Selecting the correct bat size is crucial for developing proper technique and maximising performance on the field. Here’s how players can choose the right bat as they progress from childhood to adulthood.

Cricket Bat Sizes

  • Size 0: Suitable for the youngest players, typically around 4-5 years old, or under 4 feet (1.22 metres) in height.
  • Size 1: For players around 5-6 years old, or between 4 feet (1.22 metres) and 4 feet 3 inches (1.30 metres) in height
  • Size 2: Ideal for players around 6-7 years old, or between 4 feet 3 inches (1.30 metres) and 4 feet 6 inches (1.37 metres) in height.
  • Size 3: For players around 7-8 years old, or between 4 feet 6 inches (1.37 metres) and 4 feet 9 inches (1.45 metres) in height.
  • Size 4: Suitable for players around 8-9 years old, or between 4 feet 9 inches (1.45 metres) and 4 feet 11 inches (1.50 metres) in height.
  • Size 5: Ideal for players around 9-10 years old, or between 4 feet 11 inches (1.50 metres) and 5 feet 2 inches (1.57 metres) in height.
  • Size 6: For players around 9-10 years old, or between 4 feet 11 inches (1.50 metres) and 5 feet 2 inches (1.57 metres) in height.
  • Size Harrow: Suitable for players around 11-14 years old, or between 5 feet 5 inches (1.65 metres) and 5 feet 8 inches (1.73 metres) in height. Harrow is a transitional size between junior and adult bats.
  • Size SH (Short Handle): Ideal for players over 14 years old, typically between 5 feet 8 inches (1.73 metres) and 6 feet 2 inches (1.88 metres) in height.
  • Size LH (long Handle) / LHB (Long Blade): For taller players over 6 feet 2 inches (1.88 metres), these bats are designed to accommodate their reach and height.

    Choosing the Right Bat Size

    1. Height Based Selection:

    • The most common method for selecting a cricket bat size is based on the player's height. Ensuring the bat suits the player's height is essential for proper technique and ease of play

    2. Growth Consideration:

    • For young players, it’s important to choose a bat that they can handle comfortably now, rather than buying a larger bat they can "grow into." A bat that is too large or heavy can hinder their development and technique.

    3. Player's Strength and Skill Level:

    • Younger players with more strength or advanced skills might be able to handle a slightly larger or heavier bat. However, always prioritise control and comfort over bat size.

    4. Transitioning to Adult Bats:

    • As players grow into their teenage years, they may transition from Harrow to Short Handle (SH) bats. This transition should be based on both height and comfort in handling the bat.

    5. Try Before You Buy:

    • Encourage players to try different sizes in-store or during practice sessions. A bat that feels comfortable in their hands and allows them to play their shots with ease is likely the right choice.

    6. Customisation Adjustments:

    • At Cooper Cricket, we offer custom bat sizes and adjustments to ensure that each player has a bat that perfectly suits their height, strength, and playing style.

    Final Tips

    • Weight Distribution: Ensure the bat's weight is well-distributed, making it easier to handle, especially for younger players
    • Regular Reassessment: As children grow, regularly reassess their bat size to ensure they are using a bat that supports their development
    • Quality Materials: Choose bats made from high-quality willow, as this affects performance and durability.
    • Proper Maintenance: Teach players how to properly care for their bats, including oiling and knocking-in, to prolong the bat's life and maintain performance.
