Looking after your gear

Make it last

Protective gear takes a beating. A bit of care gets you a lot more out of it, and here is what to do when it starts to show some wear.

How should I dry my gloves and pads?

Air dry them in the shade, somewhere with a bit of airflow. Never in direct sun, on a heater, or in the dryer. Heat hardens the leather and padding, and that is exactly what cracks them and splits the stitching. Make sure they are properly dry, especially the thumb, before you wear them again. Pulling on a stiff, damp glove is what tears thumbs.

How do I look after them between games?

Do not leave them sealed in your bag damp with sweat. Wipe them down, air them out, and store them somewhere cool and dry. A quick wipe inside with an antibacterial wipe keeps the smell down too. If you train a lot, rotating a second pair makes both last longer.

I have spotted a loose thread. What should I do?

Catch it early. A loose thread or a small open seam only gets worse, so deal with it before it runs. If you are handy you can re-stitch it yourself; if not, bring it in and we will take a look.

My stitching is starting to go. Can it be fixed?

Often, yes. A boot maker or a heavy-duty upholstery shop can re-sew gloves and pads with the right machine, and it is usually a cheap fix that buys you another season. Bring it to us and we will point you the right way, or sort it where we can.

My pad ripped when I dived. Is that covered?

That is wear and tear from the way the game gets played, not a manufacturing fault, so it sits outside the warranty. Pads are not indestructible. But we are here to help: bring it in and we will look at a repair or a discounted replacement. If you are unsure, talk to us.
