Most clubs play on stumps that came out of a box. Plain timber, maybe a sticker that peeled last season. It does not have to be that way. The stumps your first grade bowl at can carry your crest and your colours, finished to the same standard as a first-class match set, and you can design them yourself in a few minutes.
This is a plain guide to how custom stumps work at Cooper Cricket: which set suits which cricket, what they are made of, how the design happens, and what they cost.
Two match stumps, by bowling speed
We make two full-size match stumps and the difference between them is simple: how fast the bowling is.
Club Stumps are hardwood, rated for bowling up to about 120 kilometres an hour. That covers club seniors and every grade of junior cricket. A set is six stumps, four bails and a padded stump bag, from $299. If you need to equip several grounds, this is the set to do it with.
Shield Stumps are ash, built for bowling above 120 kilometres an hour. They are the first-class match stump: the set you would put out for a rep fixture or a turf first grade final, and the set that stands up to a genuine quick. Six stumps, four bails and a padded bag, from $369.
Both take the same full-height custom wrap, so a club can run Shield stumps on the main oval and Club stumps on the lower grades and juniors, and every set looks the same.
For synthetic wickets, training and juniors
Not every game is played on turf with in-ground points. For hard and synthetic surfaces we make three base-mounted sets, each with three stumps and two bails and the same custom artwork.
Rubber-based, timber from $229: real timber stumps on a heavy rubber base. The timber look, anywhere you play. Rubber-based, plastic from $219: tough plastic stumps on a rubber base, the all-weather workhorse for juniors and training. Spring-based from $249: timber stumps on a weighted spring base that pop back upright when struck, made for synthetic wickets and training games.
And if your club already owns good stumps, Stump Stickers from $110 are just the wraps, for three stumps with the overlap cut ready to apply. Same designer, same artwork, your existing timber.
What they are made of
The wrap is where most custom stumps fall down, usually within a season. Ours is a five-year polymeric vinyl with a matte overlaminate, which is the same class of material used on vehicle fleets and outdoor signage, not a short-life print film. The matte laminate takes the glare off under lights and protects the print from ball strike and the stump bag.
The artwork is printed in our Brisbane workshop on a Mimaki UV flatbed using LUS-170 ink, cured by UV LED rather than solvent. Mimaki's LUS-170 carries GREENGUARD Gold certification for low chemical emissions. For a club it means the finish is hard-wearing, colour-accurate to your crest, and made without the solvent process that most sticker printing still uses.
Three ways to get a design
Design it yourself. Our online designer shows your stumps in 3D as you build them. Pick one of the background designs, tap your club colours onto it, upload your logo, type the club name and choose how the lettering runs. The set turns on screen so you can see the front, the back and the way the artwork wraps around the timber. It takes most people a few minutes, and the design is saved with a code so you can come back to it or send it to someone on the committee.
Have us design it. Send us your logo and colours and we will build the design in the same tool and send you a 3D link to approve or ask for changes.
Get a quote first. If the committee needs a number before anyone opens a design, the quote builder on the custom stumps page gives you a priced quote for any mix of sets, by email, with no artwork and no payment. Bulk pricing applies automatically as the quantity goes up.
Six real sets
Every set in the picture above is a real order from this season, built in the online designer and made in the workshop: Pine Rivers CC, Cameron CC, Wistow CC, Old Ivanhoe, and two sponsor sets, Akom Homes and AZ Vehicle Protection. Different clubs, different budgets, same tool and the same ten minutes with a logo file.
A note for sponsors
Two of those six sets carry a business name rather than a club crest. Every ball bowled, every replay and every photo taken from behind the bowler's arm has the stumps in it, and most of them are blank. A business that backs a club can fund the set and put its name where everyone already looks. If you sponsor a club, or you are a club looking for one, it is worth a conversation.
Everything above is on the custom stumps page: the six types, the designer, and the quote builder. Free shipping in Australia on orders over $150, and all of it made at 1 Axford Street, Northgate.
